John Prine is a favorite of mine.  The first that I heard of his was a cute love song that he recorded with Iris DeMent called In Spite of Ourselves and then I heard a stranger but less goofy love song called Let's Invite Them Over.  And then I found his better songs.  As you know, there are too many to mention.

+1 for having good taste in music and not being a creepy bastard who hates Country.

I'm not generally a country music fan, though a few John Prine songs are favorites, from way back. Good memories of road trips, campfires, legal and illegal substances, hippies with guitars and singing loudly into the night.

Woke up this morning.
Put on my slippers.
Walked in the kitchen and died.
And oh what a feeling!
When my soul went thru the ceiling.
And on up into heaven I did ride.
When I got there they did say John it happened this way.
You slipped upon the floor and hit your head.
And all the angels say, just before you passed away, these were the very last words that you said.

Chorus:
Please don't bury me, down in that cold cold ground.
No, I'd druther have em' cut me up and pass me all around.
Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes.
and the deaf can take both of my ears if they don't mind the size.

Give my stomach to Milwaukee if they run out of beer
Put my socks in a cedar box just get em' out of here
Venus de Milo can have my arms look out! I've got your nose.
Sell my heart to the junkman and give my love to Rose

Repeat Chorus:
Please don't bury me, down in that cold cold ground.
No, I'd druther have em' cut me up and pass me all around.
Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes.
and the deaf can take both of my ears if they don't mind the size.

Give my feet to the footloose careless, fancy free.
Give my knees to the needy don't pull that stuff on me.
Hand me down my walking cane it's a sin to tell a lie.
Send my mouth way down south and kiss my a$$ goodbye.

Repeat Chorus:
Please don't bury me, down in that cold cold ground.
No, I'd druther have em' cut me up and pass me all around.
Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes.
and the deaf can take both of my ears if they don't mind the size.

Country music really isn't music. It is a technique created by the pharmaceutical companies to get as many people into depression so they can sell their anti-depression products.

It is also a sort of like Jerry Springer that flushes out dysfunction from your speakers like chairs fly on Jerry's show.

ONE HONORABLE MENTION:

I watched Roy Clark on the Hee Haw show one time. To do something a little classic for the program the man played the William Tell Overture.

I was very impressed at his mastry of the guitar and the choice to play a well known classic piece.
That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Question:

If pop music is about love, and all that bulls**t, then what's country pop ?
Also, seriously. The Dixie chicks one song "not ready to make nice", made good listening.. (Refusing to submit to political correctness).. Other than that.. Is there really anything of value here ?

Country music is about bad things happening to you, the girl/boy you loved in highschool, your dog and your truck. Also, drankin'.

Recently there's been a revolution within country music, and now songs are sometimes about bad things happening to your ex, your ex's new girl/boyfriend, their dog, or their truck. Also, drankin'.

Songs about dogs are pretty rare.  I can think of one by an Australian folk singer about a dog who visits the train station every day not knowing that his master has died in battle and isn't coming home, and one by a current American Country singer about someone who uses a girl dog to distract the policeman's guard dog in order to escape.

There's another song in which a woman is raped by a dog and one in which a woman has sex with one, but the last two examples were just single lines in songs that weren't about dogs.  Hank Sr sang Move it On Over, but if that's about dogs, then rock music is really about dogs, too.

Those examples are out of about 10,000 Country songs (or more) on my computer.  Country themes that are much more common are Jesus, trains, agriculture, heaven, hell, Hank Williams Sr. (I've lost track of how many songs have been sung about the man), and fishing.

Country Music is so netigive and Depressing.Watch this video.
https://kilosparksitup.blogspot.com/2009/04/shutting-detroit-down-video.html
Guess who was in that Video? You guessed it Mickey Rourke. Ley me tell you something Mr Rourke. You have never worked hard in your life! Hollywood doesnt count. Mr Rourke playing a working man in the video is fantasy, Being a working man in real life is a differant story. Chris Jeracho was right about Mickey Rourke when he played The Wrestler. Playing Wrestler in Hollywood is onething getting into the ring with a Pro Wrestler is another thing. My Dad worked hard in GM assembly plant in Baltimore for 33 years he told me a lot about hard work something Mickey Rourke knows nothing about.Hollywood isnt hard work unlike joining a sceen actors guild union. Mr Rourke knows nothing about getting a raise except he goes to hes agent and get a 10 million dollar contract to make a movie.Mr Rourke doesnt know whats it like worry about when you next meal is comming or not. At least Chris Jeracho showed Mr Rourke what Wrestling is like by beating the living hell outta Roddy Piper, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and Ric Flair. But Mr Rourke is too chicken to go up to a real Wrestler in the ring challeging Chris Jeracho. I wanna see Mr Rourke work 12 hours on a GM assembly line and see what real work is all about.I Became a Chris Jeracho fan because of Mr Rourke.

Yes, there's a song called Stranger In My House that always makes me laugh, because he sings about feeling the presense of another man and that there's somebody there that he can't see.  Because he's blind, you can literally picture there being another man in his house with him, even though that's obviously not what's meant.  : )

I Wanna Be A Cowboy - Boys Don't Cry

Lyrics
Riding on the range,
I've got my hat - on,
I've got my boots - dusty.

I've got my saddle
On my horse.
He's called....T-t-t-t-t-trigger
Of course.

I wanna be a cowboy
and you can be my cowgirl
I wanna be a cowboy
and you can be my cowgirl
I wanna be a cowboy

(woman's voice)
Riding on the chuck wagon,
Following my man.
His name is Ted,
Can you believe that?
Camping on the prairie
Plays havoc with my hair.
Makes me feel quite dirty,
Though we all do sometimes

I wanna be a cowboy
and you can be my cowgirl
I wanna be a cowboy
and you can be my cowgirl
I wanna be a cowboy

Looking like a hero,
Six-gun at my side,
Chewing my tobacco.
Out on the horizon,
I see a puff of smoke.
Indians on the warpath,
(Indian voice) White man speak-em with forked tongue.
Or not.

I wanna be a cowboy
and you can be my cowgirl
I wanna be a cowboy

My name is Ted,
And one day I'll be dead yo yo.

Very sweet song. Swept away

Well you send my life a whirling
Darling when you're twirling
On the floor
Who cares about tomorrow?
What more is tomorrow?
Than another day.

When you swept me away
Yeah you swept me away
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la

I see the end of the rainbow
But what more is a rainbow
Than colors out of reach
If you come down to my window
And I climb out my window
Then we'll get out of reach

Then you swept me away
Yeah you swept me away

You said with such honest feeling
But what'd you really mean
When you said that I'm your man
Well how my darling can it be
When you have never seen me
And you never will again

That you swept me away
Yeah you swept me away

Well life is ever changing
But I will always find a constant
And comfort in your love
With your heart my soul is bound
And as we dance I know
That heaven will be found

Well you send my life a whirling
Darling when you're twirling
On the floor
And who cares about tomorrow?
Girl, what more is tomorrow?
Than another day.

When you swept me away
Yeah you swept me away
Yeah you swept me away

Bonnie Raitt "Dimming of the Day"

This old house is falling down around my ears
I'm drowning in a river of my tears
When all my will is gone you hold me sway
I need you at the dimming of the day

You pulled me like the moon
pulls on the tide
You know just where I keep my better side

What days have come to keep us far apart
A broken promise or a broken heart
Now all the bonny birds have wheeled away
I need you at the dimming of the day

Come the night you're only what I want
Come the night you could be my confidant

I see you the street and in company
Why don't you come and rest your mind with me
I'm living for the night we steal away
I need you at the dimming of the day
I need you at the dimming of the day...

Part of the music I grew up with. Sorry if this has already been posted... I haven't kept up with this thread.

I remember years ago walking up to a friends truck to talk to him and he was listening to a country song. I'm not a big country fan, but any kind of music can grab me. On his radio I heard a man singing and I took notice. I had to know who it was.

That man was Keith Whitley. He was a rising star and had everything to live for. Was successful as a musician, married to another country star Lorrie Morgan...

He was a heavy alcoholic from an early age and he struggled with it his whole life. He used to tie his leg to his wife's when they went to bed at night in order to fight the urge... It was that bad. At the height of his career he found himself alone for a bit. He and his brother had plans for the next morning... His brother found him dead. He drank himself to death.

This is song just oozes feeling. It's a sad song and it could not have been sung better.

Don't close your eyes... by Mr. Whitley.

Maybe the day had a s**tty you.

OMG!

Bad Actor, I just saw in another thread where you talked about going out to see some country music and you posted a video link for the Kentucky Head Hunters and that instantly took me back to my early teens. I remember being at a girlfriends house and looking through her parents tape collection. Her mother had the usual stuff like Conway Twitty, Hank Williams, Dolly Parton and Patsy Cline but two bands stood out to me because I had never heard of them. One was Creedence Clear Water Revival and the other one scared me just by the name. I quickly discovered that I had heard many songs by Creedence on the radio but I just never paid attention to the name of the band. I did not give the Kentucky Head Hunters a listen because I simply did not like the name of the band. I was much older when I finally heard one of their songs by accident and liked it. It was the same shock I had when I first learned the name of the band who sung 'Flirting With Disaster'. Molly Hatchet? With a name like that and the album covers they had I always assumed it was going to be angry music. I was similarly skeptical when another friend first introduced me to Widespread Panic. The sound was not what I expected it to be based on the name of the band.

This is one of the reasons I like being a part of a diverse community. I never know when someone will share something that will trigger pleasant memories or make me think about things in a different way.

I am enjoying reading through past conversations and current ones and I am enjoying this thread and a few others that are more personal and lighthearted. I like your perspective and personality.

^^^ Cool. When I was younger, and living in Southern California... I was a shipping clerk for a company called Groove Tubes/GT Electronics. They sold matched power tubes for tube guitar amps... The GT Electronics divisions was custom high end amps. Since I was a guitar player, I loved it. The owner had one of the largest and most impressive collections of tube amps in the world. Most of them were on display in the shop.

Because of this, clients would visit and want to check them out. One of the bands that stopped by were the Kentucky Headhunters and they were way cool guys. We played their CD in the shop all the time.. ||smiley||

The owner sold the company to Alesis? I think that is who bought it.

Thanks, and likewise. ||smiley||

Sometimes folks join forums and are all business and never really venture out of the serious conversations. I think it's nice to get away from all the seriousness and shoot the breeze. That way, you remember that there is a real living breathing human being on the other end of that keyboard.

It's nice to have a heated disagreement in one thread, and yet be able to lighten things up in another... I think anyway.

Glad you are here.

Fallin' on deaf ears of corn
Lined up behind me like a big parade
Of late to work road raged jerks
Shoutin' obscene words flippin' me the bird
Well you may be on a state paved road
But that blacktop runs through my payload
Excuse me for tryin' to do my job

Otherwise sit tight and be nice

But cussin' me ain't savin' no time hoss
This big-wheeled wide load ain't goin' any faster
So just smile and wave and tip your hat

QuoteAs announced on "Dancing With the Stars" Monday night as well as on his social media, St. Louis No. 1 celeb Nelly has released a new single called "Lil Bit" with country act Florida Georgia Line.

The song was released to streaming platforms late Thursday night.

Referencing "hip-hop on the hoedown," the catchy, twangy number rolls along effortlessly, and sounds like the rapper's biggest bid for a fresh hit in years.

It's from his upcoming EP "Heartland."
