Title: Who’s the……
Post by: Meat on June 10, 2022, 04:40:39 PM
racist? I went to do a piss test where the lobby was split in two for seating purposes.   On my left were all African-Americans, on the right everyone else. Subconsciously I went right. After awhile another African-American fella came in. After his trip to the front desk he hollers "How come all the white folks are over here and all the black folks over here?" Great stuff. Who in the office was racist? All of us, none of us or no telling?

gun nut/supremacist? I went to a gun shop the other day and saw many many skin colors, genders and sizes and shapes of human beings. I'd like to be able to judge them swiftly like the media tries so how do I tell?

As a first approximation, use shopping for AK/ARs and large (6+ rounds) magazines as a filter.

Hunters do not need large magazines, and high-powered weapons are not appropriate for personal or home defense. If arming for something else, good possibility they are nuts of one sort or another.

a hundred year old winchester 1873 repeating rifle holds 15 rounds of .44-40 black powder ammunition. the 1886 holds 9 rounds of .45-70.

my 58-year-old .22 marlin model 60 is a semiautomatic rifle and holds 18 rounds.

a standard 1911 colt .45 government model semiautomatic pistol holds 7 plus 1, while the 1935 browning hi-power hols 13 plus 1.

im thinking enforcing a six-round limit might be impractical.

Although I don't agree with K, I did ask a question so....Now I haven't been in a gun shop in years so it was interesting to see the mixture.

I was thinking semiautomatic long guns for the magazine limit.

Handguns are not high powered weapons. Even so, I think the 7 rounds in a 1911 are adequate for personal and household protection. seven rounds of 9mms should be enough too.Grandfather in the handguns and make larger magazines illegal to possess or sell.

Any civilian who gets off by firing off 30 rounds in 10-15 seconds is by my definition a gun nut. s**t. The damn bullets cost $1.00-$1.50.

Also, considering .22 rimfire, those are not highpowered, either. Kip Kinkle used a .22 to kill 2 classmates and sound 25 others in 1998 in what I believe was the first mass shooting at a K-12 school.

Not deadly enough, so after the ARs became available again, all the shooters started using them, with much higher kill rates.

handgun mass shootings? a few certainly.  Certainly most gun deaths are caused by handguns, but most of those are not mass shootings, are typically 1-1.

This article counts number of mass shootings by rifle and handgun, not mass killing. Unable to quickly find comparison for kills.

no. ive counted.

mass shootings, defined as 4 or more deaths. handguns mostly, shotguns and non semiauto rifles .

the assault rifle killings kill more people per incident,  but fewer people in mass shootings in general

could be things are changing. i counted all the deaths in mass shootings from 1990 on but its been several years now

There is something kinda queasy about picking nits on mass killings and shootings. Get too lost in the weeds and I cannot see the blood anymore.

Hollywood loves the mass-shooting, at least in their films. Video game manufactures love them too because that's what sells. Now if you think there's some kind of silly connection to the real thing give your head a big shake.

I love fortnite.  I'm getting pretty good at it too, but I tend to be a lazy pacifist, where I hide as much as I can, wait until there's like 3 people out of a 100 left and then I have to become a cold blooded killer with all the types of shotguns and lasers and everything else that I gathered. My wife always laughs at me and tells me I'm playing with 8 year olds anyway, so it's not much of accomplishment to win, but I win all the time.  But I do think that just the fact that you're gathering guns and running around trying to shoot people, that would have an influence on a six-year-old or 8 year old that is allowed to play that game non stop.

I might add, not only violent but a non-stop babysitter for millions of parents. Now I'm not so stupid to admit guns don't kill people etc etc but, imagine growing up slaughtering folks on a video game for high scores and then mixing in another painful circumstance like bullying.  (Oops, hit quote twice)

It's been many years for me, but AR15s are fun to shoot.  Rapidly emptying a clip is fun too.  It would be fun to cut down a tree with a minigun too.  I would like to shoot a .50 caliber sniper rifle, or a tank.

I like powerful machinery too.  I like powerful cars, lawn mowers, bull dozers, excavators, oil rigs, weed eaters, etc.  I like powerful telescopes, microscopes, huge fish tanks, powerful computers.

Does that make me a nut?  Does that make me a white supremist?

It is a good question, though, especially because it requires us to distinguish between structural racism and personal "racialized" perceptions AND the relationship between the two.

Almost as if that room were a sociology experiment.

s**t, chopping down trees with a minigun is nearly the definition of a gun nut. What useful thing can you do with a minigun that you could not do with a .270?

Just for clarification I enjoy(ed) the shooting sports. Still enjoy plinking and target shooting. I own a few handguns (.38, .357, .45auto, 9mm auto) and a variety of bolt action and single-shot rifles (.22, .240, .270, an old 8mm Mauser).

A .50cal sniper rifle is fun. Not nearly the kick you might expect. Heavy piece, though. And apparently more accurate than my shooting. The guy who owned it was hitting beer cans at 500 yards.

I have not hunted for decades, but have nothing against the practice.

It's not about the utility or need.  It's just entertainment.  I would never cut down a tree for entertainment, but I think it would fun to shoot a minigun or any big gun really.  It's not something I would want to do every day, just once.  It's just the awe of it like some other entertainments.  It's like the awe of a 1000 hp care engine.  It's just about the biggest and the best.  I have no need of the world's largest telescope, but I know it would be a blast to play with.  Does that make me a telescope nut?

Really?

Guns kill, some are built to kill quickly and massively. Telescopes are not effective combat weapons and typically cause few deaths per century.

With a telescope you can see far things more clearly. With a gun you can kill far things more easily and in greater quantity.

I do not remember. Not  modern pattern though.  Have not looked at it in years. Got it in preparation for a trip by Alaska a long time ago insane of a .300mag or 12ga slug gun which I could in no way afford.

It worked fine at one time. Definitely not a target rifle. Never shot it at anything that breathes.

Oh yeah. I got an old pump action air rifle. It used  to  put five shots in a dime at 20 yards. I should get it out and check the o-rings. Cheaper and quieter to shoot.

There are other things we use that were first designed as an aid for killing.  Killing is not the only use for guns.  Is that irrelevant?

I enjoy target shooting and plinking, hitting a small target far away. What is your point?

Same! But I use an airgun hehe

Love airguns for target shooting.
Oh yeah. I got an old pump action air rifle. It used  to  put five shots in a dime at 20 yards. I should get it out and check the o-rings. Cheaper and quieter to shoot.

Nice! I have a break barrel one and one that needs a hand pump - I don't use this as much because it sounds like a proper .22 gun.

The break barrel has a built in suppressor.

suppressor will not help sonic effects. A heavier bullet should get you below the speed of sound at the expense of range. Accuracy might improve, too.

I don't know but I do have a silencer for the pump one and it definitely kills the noise a lot. It's just a hassle because it needs an adapter so I can screw it on which means I can't use the front sight.

Might get a dot sight like I have for the break barrel...

I declare there are some gun nuts now at IGI. At least as crazy as that African-American chicky buying that AR-15 last Sunday. (I think she bought it but 10 day waiting period, no walky out with it) Now on a related subject, I might might help my little Cambodian buddy with his 2A rights soon. He grew up around AK-47's and M1-30 Carbines but, on the wrong end of those MFers. I get worried for him so....

i dont see a problem with guns, as guns.

i see a problem with certain categories of people being allowed easy access to certsin kinds of guns.

its true that banning  assault style rifles will not keep them out of the hands of criminals. but its not criminals who are performing school/church/grocery store mass shoitings. its nutcase and racist white men. banning these weapons, background checks and red flag enforcement will do something here. but i dont see a ban as possible, so i would support anything else as a partial gain.

I'm just trying to understand what you call a gun nut.  It seems to be wanting to shoot powerful guns.  Is that correct?

Maybe.

"wanting to shoot" is an interesting way to put it. I see a gun as a tool. At one time I had need of those tools for reasons other than recreation. Can not say that as an adult I ever wanted to shoot powerful guns. What I wanted, whether hunting or target shooting, was to put a small piece of metal in a very specific spot. The shooting itself was incidental to that.

Most of the people I know who do firearms seriously have a similar attitude. Killing trees with shotguns or rifles is generally seen as pretty demented.

The difference may be similar to that between someone who uses Big Firecrackers to celebrate the 4th and someone who uses Big Firecrackers to blow things up.

the advantage of a .50cal is that it reaches farther than an air rifle. But my .240 can hit beer cans at 500 yards if I do my part so shooting a .50 is not something I want to do.

So yes, maybe: if what you get off on is the shooting of Big Guns then you have probably checked one qualification as a gun nut. You may still be a little short of certification, though. Do you have any more qualifications?

Probably. Does it matter where the bullet goes? or is it the rapid bang bang you like?

I have to be honest about another qualification: having a bunch of unused guns around.

I once had a .223 varmint rifle.  Single shot bolt action bull barrel. It was death to woodchucks at any range I could see them.

PS: 2 clips is $60-$90 burnt up in 30 seconds. Is shooting money out the barrel that much fun?

Yeah as an enthusiast it's very expensive. And you need hundreds of rounds per week or so to hone your skill.

It's about the same cost as golf here.

At the range, 50 balls is $1-1.50. At the course, it's $20 for the course and $10 for the caddy.

I tried to hit a target, but didn't do too well, but the main thing was just to see how fast I could shoot it.  It isn't something I've repeated.  I wanted to do it.  I did it.  Now I'm good.  It was only marginally fun.  It's definately not fun enough for the price.  But even if money was no object, I still wouldn't bother.

There is a certain fun factor in shooting bolt action or lever action.  It's probably more fun than semi-auto, but semi-auto is the most convenient.  I usually prefer more shooting and less fiddling.

I'd like to shoot a .50 for the same reason as you, but I also want to shoot through a concrete wall.

I'd also like to vacuum with a 240 hp riding vacuum cleaner too.  I guess I might be a little overall nutty, but not specifically a gun nut, I don't think.

Been thinking about getting a .22 rifle tho. Something that has a magazine so I don't have to put the bullets in one by one. I don't mind c**king it every shot but better if I don't have to do that like a handgun.

the 10/22 has a 10 round detachable magazine.

or you can get .22s with tubular magazines in semiauto or pump action.

my old marlin 60 was made in 1964 and has a tubular magazine that holds 18 .22 long rifle

Nice! I think we have both those brands here.
I think I prefer the 10 round mag.

Tho I have been thinking about a nice revolver too. I understand some can take both 357 and 38?

Will have to sell my armscor .45 tho.

Either a rifle or revolver would be alright.

The brass on the .38 is shorter, though, so using .38 rounds in a .357 will eventually erode the chamber mouth.

i never knew that they would erode. makes sense.

i had a ruger security six .357 for a while that i bought for javelina hunting and for my wife to wear when she was alone up in the mountains in arizona doing blackbird research

it was stainless, so i coud wash it in the dishwaser. i dont knwo whether the stainless would be anym ore resistant to erosion than just the blued steel.

i dont think i ever shot more than two or three thousand rounds through it

So I re-visited the gun store today after 10 days. 7 African-Americans in total, 3 Asians, a number of pale-faces like me and last but not least a cross-dresser. (No it wasn't my brother) So funny how the MSM portrays gun buyers and like most things, they get it absolutely wrong. The black fella in front of me got two pistols. Now I'm not really into someone's skin color but that seems important to many. They're just average Americans to me. Great to see though, every size, shape, race, gender and respectfully whatever that cross-dresser wants to be known as. (I didn't see his purchase btw.)
