Hi there :)

You might have noticed me swimming in the deep end in a couple of other threads, but it's all good.

I love anything technology or pc related so if there's any modders or overclockers here I'd love to hear from you and talk endlessley about computers.

I'm a believer, so I'm really looking forward to being told that there's no God. Hey, that's cool, I'm not going to try and tell you to believe that there is one.  You might mistakenly think that I am, but I won't be.

Basically what I'm saying is that I'm not here to evangelise or try to convert you. As some of you in the future savage my beliefs, try to remember, I used to be an atheist too once, so I can empathise with you.  If you don't assume that I'm always trying to convince you to accept Jesus, and realise that this is just what I feel right for me, then we should get along reasonable well I reckon and be able to learn something about where we're at respctively.

Other than that, I'm thick skinned, so there's no need to worry about upsetting me with swear words or nasty names.  You won't hurt my feelings.

Peace :)

Welcome aboard, Jdaaawg.  I love computers, not so much for tweaking but more for the many things that they enable me to do.  I never oc'd my cpu, but I did fry a video card once.  Maybe you can help Assy install Windows on his Linux box.  Because he prefers freeware OS's, he has trouble even viewing a youtube video, and once spent 8 hours trying to install a driver for his digital camera.  Poor guy.

+1 for being new.  : )

Thanks buddy :)

I'm just finding my way. Gonna hang around for a bit, but alas, I'm strictly a microsoft man. And I wll probably vomit if someone utters the satanic words of "dell" or "mac", or the word which I can not utter here, but suffice to say it is of the green camp. Pure sickness.

Shame about that gpu that you fried, to date I haven't cooked anything, but then I'm all water cooled so heat is no longer a consideration really.

I love them.  I can just sit in a sofa chair (which I call my sloth pit because I mostly live in that) and do twenty different things at once while rolling smokes in between. Amazing. All I have to move is my arms hands and eyes.

Upon even seeing such a name referred one wonders which of the five senses is most brutally violated. Sight immediately srpings into the lead!
If so extrenely offended as this were I, such an instance would cause me to hack the site, get your I.P. address, hack the exchange servers in London, translate your I.P. into your physical address after hacking your ISP, and then come into your house while you were sleeping and place redback spiders in all of your shoes. But not before poking them a few times to get them all riled up so they'd be extra aggressive when they bit your toes and pumped you full of neuro-toxin.

There's always the exception that proves the rule.

You're very welcome. Thanks for opening them up and taking an interest.

It's not been as harsh as I was expecting.  So I'm going to stick around for a while. I'm glad I can swear here because in my opinion sometimes there just isn't any other word that's as descriptive as a swear word to convey the emotion.

Thanks for the offer on win95, although I haven't used it for years.  Such as it is I use 64bit Vista as my main OS, but installed on that I run vMware (virtual machine) upon which I have five virtual machines running. One XP pro, Win 2008 server, 32 bit Vista, win2k pro and also 2003 server.
What this means is that on my desktop, I can virtual run windows inside windows and can switch between operation systems at the click of a mouse.  So effectively I run 6 OS's at a time on one computer.  You need avery powerful rig to do that, but it's an amazing bit of software. It's really useful for the study that I'm doing for an I.T. qualification.

If anyone needs help with vista problems, let me know I have s**tloads of my own as I run the 64 bit version, (which means twice as many hadware and driver issues) so I'm growing inexperience with it every day and have a catalogue of fixes built up already.

I ran VMWare for many years, either side of the year 2000 - a great bit of software.  I stopped using it about 3 years ago though I sort of stay up to date with it via their new releases(?) mailing list.  Why don't you install Linux under it and test drive a proper OS?

It is awesome isn't it.  I'm using v6.04 at the moment. I couldn't believe how simple it is to set them up together over a virtual network and bridge over the hardware from the real machine. I've allocated 1/4 of a gig of RAM to each guest, except the 32 bit vista guest which has a gig, but I still get left with 2gig for the host system.

Jdaaawg

Hey Sweets  ||smiley||

Studying for a CompTia A+ certification, and selecting the 'I.T. Technician' module, as it's the most complete of the 3 options.

Theres four exams in total, 2 multiple choice to make up the first part, which is the (601) 'essentials', and then 2 more to get the (602) 'IT technician' module. Put both of those together and I'll have the A+ qualification, which should land me a much better career hopefully.  I was easily ready to pass the 601 before I started studying, but it's the 602 that I need to study a lot for.  I'm not planning on taking the 601 until I'm ready for the 602 as without the 602 it's not the full qualification, which I will need to prove that I can do what I say I can do.

I reckon, time and other commitments permitting, I'll have it cracked in another few months.

Then I will be invincible muahahahaha.

Not a lot actually, Assy, most of the networking I'm learning about is hardware, windows and security based, so that I can understand what networking specialists are talking about when I need to speak to them.
I also have to have a good overall knowledge of I.P. and networking hardware, with a high level of ability to configure windows security and networking tools.  Also need to be able to install and configure pretty much any type of networking or I.T. hardware available and configure pretty much everything in all versions of windoze.

So far as TCP/IP or NetBeui goes, that's usually left to networking specialists.

Sorry pal  ||smiley||

Hi Jdaaawg  :)

I know next to nothing about computers, which is unfortunate since every time my brother gets a hold of the one I use it seems to end up irreversibly damaged, and so I end up losing most of the stuff I have stored on it. I'm sure if I were more computer literate I could probably salvage more, but ah well. I think I'll just get him a mac so that he can go on being abusive to the computer and I don't have to worry about it.

In fairness macs do tend to just.. well... 'work'.. when you plug something into it, like an i-phone or camera or other firewire device, and firewire is faster than usb. But, for the types of multimedia that I use my machine for a mac just can't get close to the performance of an equivalent spec pc, and they can't be modded like pc's.

But don't you ever tell anybody that you just heard me say something good about a mac!

Hey seka thanks too  ||smiley||

Don't beat yourself up, computers rarely work like they're supposed to no matter how well you mantain them or how much you know.  In fact, the more you know, the more problems you're likely to be fixing because you're more than likely to be fiddling about with more things on them.

Unfortunately, macs are not without their maintenenece problems.  People can't be blamed for overlooking this, though, because of the good reputation that macs have for reliability and ease of use.
This is true in many ways, but no system is fault free.  Sure, they have a much better reputation and don't get anywhere near the amount of viruses etc, they aren't totally immune either, and they do have many problems with other software compatibility.
For example, try buying a decent game that runs well on a mac.  Not easy at all.

Still, end user application mix is the factor that determins the reality of how good any machine is at it's job.  So long as it does what it's used for at a reasonable speed, it's a tool that's performing its job.
Mac's and pc's are broadly designed for different jobs so I spit on them.  ||wink||

I also REALLY hate ipods and itunes with a passion, so this often clouds my opinion on other apple products.

||smiley||

That's twice I've commented well on macs, they must be using subliminal advertising somewhere on this forum.  ||rolleyes||

Think that's a slightly differnent thing to the A+.  The A+ looks very deeply into the technical undertanding of most I.T. systems going from the last twenty yrs right up to current day. It's considered to be a difficult qualification to attain as certifies me to have at least some understanding of everything in I.T., so that nothing is unfamiliar, with a specialisation in everything windows and hardware installation / maintenence based.  There's quite a lot to learn to say the least.  I'm glad I had a head start.

QuoteThe markets also locking up tightly, and there's a lack of IT jobs of higher caliber.... I'm interested in your thoughts as a "die-hard" tech-head. Where will IT take you?
Kind of true, depending on location.
Fortunately I live in the U.K.'s silicon valley, Bekshire, so around here I.T. jobs is all ya get like it or not.  We have thousands of new office buildings springing up around here too so hopefully they'll be filling at about the time I get certified.

To be honest, where it takes me isn't a deciding factor, I'm only doing it because I've already burned myself out in sales, so this is more a choice of doing something that I love to do that I could do all day long and not be bored.  So long as I can pay my half of the expenses of life and  keep myself updated with lots of pc hardware, I'm a happy camper.  The sort of salary I could get around here as a certified A+ technician would easily cover my needs plus some.
If I could be paid money for t**tting around with LOTS of pc's all day long as well, I'd be in heaven on Earth!!
I've only ever done work for S.M.E.'s so far, so the A+ will help open doors at bigger organisations with more resources and bigger more sophisticated systems.  Yeee f**kinn haaa.  ||grin||

This is what people in the know have been saying to me so naturally I chose this as my first step.

That's werid, the mate of mine who got me into computers in the first place started off running automated network installs of windows, then moved up the ranks to the m.c.s.e., and now he works for big banks setting up their security infrastructures, his list of certs is three pages long! Literally!  That earns him over ?100kp/a.  Not quite to be sniffed at for sitting in front of a pc all day, eh?  It's a pretty broad field of progression for the right people.

Yup, he's got 'the passion' alright.  I'd reognise it anywhere.
I have a lot of respect for those cisco fellas, they definitely earn every penny of their money as it isn't as easy as it looks to some lower level techs.

Upon reflection I realised she was right as I use it for everything from work to play to study to just a hobby.  I'll post a picture of it when I get my digital camera back.  I think you'll like it.  It's my baby.

QuoteNice "chatting" with you!
And you.  Sunnysweets is an apt name for you I think.

Fortunately my wife is cool about it, and I don't have kids so my excuses just about pass as believable reasons.  ||rolleyes||

I think if we didn't have the kids, during the time of all his studies I'd have had many hobbies...but children are definately not hobbies and they were babies when he was in the thick of it.  I support him though, heck it's because of his job we can have a house and I can stay home with the kids (which after the last couple of days I'm wondering why I want to continue that||angry||...lol, oh well!)  Take care J!

Retail therapy, I say a big yes to that one...as long as I don't have to take the kids!  Just kidding, they are the love of my life, but they are young and tantrumy (don't think that is a word, lol.)

Yeah -2, that'll probably change~I've only been here since Sept so I expect more  ||wink||

Have a great night J  ||cheesy||
