John Prine is a favorite of mine.  The first that I heard of his was a cute love song that he recorded with Iris DeMent called In Spite of Ourselves and then I heard a stranger but less goofy love song called Let's Invite Them Over.  And then I found his better songs.  As you know, there are too many to mention.

+1 for having good taste in music and not being a creepy bastard who hates Country.

I'm not generally a country music fan, though a few John Prine songs are favorites, from way back. Good memories of road trips, campfires, legal and illegal substances, hippies with guitars and singing loudly into the night.

Woke up this morning.
Put on my slippers.
Walked in the kitchen and died.
And oh what a feeling!
When my soul went thru the ceiling.
And on up into heaven I did ride.
When I got there they did say John it happened this way.
You slipped upon the floor and hit your head.
And all the angels say, just before you passed away, these were the very last words that you said.

Chorus:
Please don't bury me, down in that cold cold ground.
No, I'd druther have em' cut me up and pass me all around.
Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes.
and the deaf can take both of my ears if they don't mind the size.

Give my stomach to Milwaukee if they run out of beer
Put my socks in a cedar box just get em' out of here
Venus de Milo can have my arms look out! I've got your nose.
Sell my heart to the junkman and give my love to Rose

Repeat Chorus:
Please don't bury me, down in that cold cold ground.
No, I'd druther have em' cut me up and pass me all around.
Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes.
and the deaf can take both of my ears if they don't mind the size.

Give my feet to the footloose careless, fancy free.
Give my knees to the needy don't pull that stuff on me.
Hand me down my walking cane it's a sin to tell a lie.
Send my mouth way down south and kiss my a$$ goodbye.

Repeat Chorus:
Please don't bury me, down in that cold cold ground.
No, I'd druther have em' cut me up and pass me all around.
Throw my brain in a hurricane and the blind can have my eyes.
and the deaf can take both of my ears if they don't mind the size.

John Prine gives Country Music a good name.

Country music really isn't music. It is a technique created by the pharmaceutical companies to get as many people into depression so they can sell their anti-depression products.

It is also a sort of like Jerry Springer that flushes out dysfunction from your speakers like chairs fly on Jerry's show.

ONE HONORABLE MENTION:

I watched Roy Clark on the Hee Haw show one time. To do something a little classic for the program the man played the William Tell Overture.

I was very impressed at his mastry of the guitar and the choice to play a well known classic piece.
That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

My only album is "Great Days", and I know he's done some great stuff since then. I would love to see "Angel from Montgomery" posted.

I love Alabama 3's version of "Breaking the speed of the loneliness"

But here is the original by the master.

Question:

If pop music is about love, and all that bulls**t, then what's country pop ?
Also, seriously. The Dixie chicks one song "not ready to make nice", made good listening.. (Refusing to submit to political correctness).. Other than that.. Is there really anything of value here ?
One man's insult is another person exercising his right to free speech.~ Ricky (I think).

Pop just means "POPULAR"

Country music isn't too bad. I grew up with it. Never heard of this guy that you're talking about though.

Country music is about bad things happening to you, the girl/boy you loved in highschool, your dog and your truck. Also, drankin'.

Recently there's been a revolution within country music, and now songs are sometimes about bad things happening to your ex, your ex's new girl/boyfriend, their dog, or their truck. Also, drankin'.

Songs about dogs are pretty rare.  I can think of one by an Australian folk singer about a dog who visits the train station every day not knowing that his master has died in battle and isn't coming home, and one by a current American Country singer about someone who uses a girl dog to distract the policeman's guard dog in order to escape.

There's another song in which a woman is raped by a dog and one in which a woman has sex with one, but the last two examples were just single lines in songs that weren't about dogs.  Hank Sr sang Move it On Over, but if that's about dogs, then rock music is really about dogs, too.

Those examples are out of about 10,000 Country songs (or more) on my computer.  Country themes that are much more common are Jesus, trains, agriculture, heaven, hell, Hank Williams Sr. (I've lost track of how many songs have been sung about the man), and fishing.
