Something said in another thread(by me I think) made me think to start this thread
"Cleanliness is next to godliness" is not in the scriptures. There are close calls but no exact quotes. These are the closest I could find.
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
John 15:3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.
2 Corinthians 7:1 Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
James 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Ephesians 5:26-27 So that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.
(I actually cheated here. I love Goggle)
Your turn. a famous saying that is attributed to the bible but is not there.

[23] And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene. Nobody has ever found this prophecy in the Bible that Matthew made in this particular verse. Not even one prophet let alone "spoken by the prophets" plural.

I'm feeling particularly lazy today so I googled a list BIBLE MISQUOTES
All men are created equal All's well that ends well An idle mind is the devil's workshop As the twig is bent, so shall the tree grow As you make your bed, you must lie in it Beauty is only skin deep Better half a loaf than no bread at all Blood is thicker than water Bread is the staff of life Charity begins at home Cleanliness is next to godliness Confession is good for the soul Every cloud has a silver lining Familiarity breeds contempt Give the devil his due God helps those who help themselves God is in heaven, and all is right with the world God moves in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform God's mill grinds slow but true Honest is the best policy Idle hands are the devil's workshop Lord, what fools these mortals be Money is the root of all evil Neither a borrower nor a lender be Spare the rod and spoil the child Sweet are the uses of adversity The gift without the giver is bare The time is out of joint There is none so blind as he who will not see To err is human, to forgive, divine United we stand, divided we fall When in Rome do as the Romans do Take it with the grain of salt

Money is the root of all evil.
1 Tim 1:10 " For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." Quite so. There is a huge difference between the meaning of the misquote and the actual quote.

Half of those I had never attributed to the bible. To be honest, I had never heard anyone attribute the few to the bible. Shakespeare or US founding fathers maybe. especially the "to err is human..." one

Not even one prophet let alone "spoken by the prophets" plural. very good point. not even in any deterocanonical or pseudepigrapha that i know about. sheds interesting light on the concept of a canon another: spare the rod and spoil the child.

Not. One. Brain. Cell. Left. No, it is not a valid inference. It is light years away from the slightest understanding of the story. Try learning what levirate marriage is either here http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?artid=293&letter=L or on Wikipedia. Do you understand that there is such a thing as literary criticism and that when dealing with ancient literature you actually need to know something (a lot of things) about the culture in order to understand what you are reading? Why would you just assume that you can pick up a 3000 year old tale and read it like you read the menu at McDonalds? Why do you think people can and do earn Ph.Ds in ancient literatures and languages, if any Tom, Dick or Harry off the street can get it right, without any knowledge at all?

I don't give a stuff about "Levirite marriage", but Tamar (in the story) agreed to sleep with Judah in exchange for a goat, and Onan was struck dead by God for "spilling his seed" instead of f**king her.
I'll draw my own conclusions, thanks.
