I was raised a Christian, never really gave it much thought though. I was married at 20 to a Catholic who's family is pretty fundamental in their views, her mom believes the Latin Tridentine Mass is the only true mass. My ex-wife tried for many years to change me and I did eventually join the church. I have 4 children and when the oldest 3 were in their late teens, I really started reading the bible with a critical eye. It didn't take me too long to realize what total and complete bulls**t is being pedaled by organized religion. My youngest son, around 16 or 17 at the time, told me he did not believe in God. I was a little slower to come to the realization that I didn't either. He later told me that I hadn't believed in a long time and that was why he questioned things. It is amazing how we can fool ourselves. I remained married for another 4 or 5 years, none of which were very good with her not being able to accept my non-belief.

Finally last year my then wife went to see a physic and after the physic told her that "I could hurt her", she left the state with our youngest daughter (10) and stayed with our oldest son. At this point I filed for divorce and went back to college. I had dropped out of college 29 year ago to get married and have been a carpenter for the last 25 years.

I don't necessarily have anything against the concept of religion, but in practice it makes people do some really stupid things. I do have a problem with people trying to rewrite history and make the U.S.A. out to be a Christian nation. If you want to believe in fairy tales, go ahead, just don't require anyone else to believe it. I feel I have done a pretty good job raising my kids, and in truth the Catholic Churches idiotic teachings helped, but none of my kids believe in God. They all believe in questioning and in the pursuit of knowledge instead of just an old set of beliefs.

So to me religion and the possibility I might be punished in Hell for all eternity was stronger and more important to my ex-wife than I was so 28 years of marriage was shot to hell (no pun intended).

I have been single now for a couple of months and being unemployed and living with a high school buddy life is certainly not what I had planned at this time, but I am very optimistic for the first time in years. I can't wait to get done with school and get a decent job. Definitely looking towards the future.

Welcome to the forums! I didn't want to admit my unbelief myself for quite a while, you're not alone. :)

Welcome.  I'm delighted to hear that you're learning to pay attention to the voice of Truth in your heart that helped you to see what you didn't really believe.  Keep listening to that voice, and you will come to know the voice of the Living God, Christ within.
