I don't have much of a problem with people just because they're psychics.  I see the more decent psychics as kind of like magicians.  But when a psychic crosses the line and milks somebody who has just lost a loved one by pretending to speak to that person, it disgusts me.  You really have to be a sick, twisted piece of shlt to do that to someone.  It's not because they're psychics that i dislike them.  It's because they're a$$holes.  I also dislike a$$holes who con the elderly out of their savings, a$$holes who manipulate people with tarot cards, a$$holes who tell people not to get vaccinated, a$$holes who rake in the money performing fake miracles, a$$holes who prescribe homeopathic remedies, a$$holes who tell people not to wear condoms, and so on.

In most of those examples, I don't have to put much thought into it, because I can imagine people suffering, and it turns my stomach.  Last Oct, I read an article about a four month old baby with a skin disease, whose parents opted for homeopathic remedies.  Over the course of five months, breaks in the baby's skin caused by the rashes led to one infection after another.  Finally, the baby was taken to a real doctor, but by that time it was too late.  The baby had been so ravaged by infections that even her corneas had begun to melt.  The baby was given morphine to ease the pain and died a few weeks later. Real medicine could have treated her, but her father, the homeopath, gave her a slow painful death, instead. 

In one way or another the other examples I mentioned lead to suffering.  Even just hearing or reading about suffering disturbs me.  I don't say this to be funny or to imply anything about you, but the reason I feel so strongly about all this is that I'm not a psychopath.

Do you think it's enough to criticize others failures, or should people do something in the world to alleviate suffering on a personal level?

SoM, if you just tell him that your invented God told you they are wrong QM'll be fine with that.

After all, that's why he thinks that the things he thinks are wrong are wrong.

Do you think it's enough to criticize others failures, or should people do something in the world to alleviate suffering on a personal level?

People should do both, whether it's giving thru work or church or helping out the neighbor.  But when you don't criticize, you're helping to put people in harm's way.  When Benny Hinn came to town, there were tens of thousands of Christians who came out to support him.  Tens of thousands of Christians who came out to support a killer and a fraud. So many Christians had showed up that they couldn't even get them all into the stadium, so Hinn's people collected money from the parking lot and hauled it off in large trash bins.  Inside, Hinn was collecting even more money, while giving people false hope that he's going to cure a child's paralysis or destroy a grandmother's cancer.  Desperate people fork over their savings and people refuse their treatments and die because of Hinn.  Maybe all those Christians supporting him are truly ignorant but their friends, families, coworkers, and especially their pastors can't all be that ignorant, too.  The suffering Hinn causes comes from people, mostly Christians, looking the other way and letting it happen.  People should feel ashamed to give Benny money, but they don't, because so few people say anything.

That's great.  James Randi pulled a similar stunt before Congress.  He downed a couple boxes of homeopathic sleeping pills.
