After lo these many months, I am just realizing that I never introduced myself properly on this forum. So, ahem... Greetings. My name is Shawna. I am happily married to the love of my life, and I have five children ages 12, 11, 8, 7, and 5. They are all wonderful generous geniuses with a knack for breaking things and the occasional anger management problem. I am 45 years old. I am a conservative Quaker (which means I am a Christian Quaker who worships in the traditional Quaker style). I was not born a Quaker. I converted to Quakerism as an adult a few years after I converted to Christianity. I spent most of my young adulthood (until my early thirties) as an agnostic. I belly dance. I am a pretty good cook, except when I am busy, then it's cold cereal for everyone. I am a lousy housekeeper. Currently, my job is at home, taking care of the kids and the dogs and the cats and the donkey and the goat and the hamster and the parakeets and the goldfish. The goat got into the house last week and ate the expensive chocolate bar I had on the kitchen table... I currently have somewhat against her. We live in rural Ohio in the foothills of Appalachia. The well is currently dry, and I am hauling water from town. The furnace burns coal, and we are very toasty... I have 5 tons of coal in the basement right now, and am expecting another 5 tons sometime next week. Yay! A warm winter house this year! In the past, I have worked in banking, in insurance, as a library clerk, as a technical writer for various computer companies, at McDonald's, as an English tutor, briefly as a high-school English teacher, and as a beekeeper and maker of beeswax candles and beeswax-based body care products. That's all I can think of offhand... there may be a few more, but my brain ain't what it used to be. My husband, Kevin, used to post here, but he has moved on to other projects. Anyway, I am pleased to meet you all.

Wow, 5 kids??? That'd be one thing if you were single, but you've also got Kevin to take care of! If there were 5 kids in my fam, there would have been perpetual war. Someone should pin a medal on you just for not going crazy.
And I'm curious, how much coal does it take to keep things toasty thru the Winter? And how long does the Winter last up there? (no, i'm not stupid. in Southern CA, there are only 3-4 days of winter, and it's rarely so cold that you can't wear shorts outside. it doesn't snow, and we measure our rainfall in drops, not inches.)

A couple hives. They are no longer a commercial enterprise. We may eventually go back into bodycare products, but we will probably never be commercial beekeepers again. Too expensive.

Yes, more or less perpetual war. I do go crazy every now and again. The kids immediately shape up, and I can hear them whispering to each other... "Uh oh Mom's mad this time. We'd better stay out of her way..." As soon as I calm down, it's all business as usual. The green tea in the keyboard two days ago nearly put them all in the barn for a week.... I used to live in California, so I know that you are not stupid. Not Southern CA, the Central Valley. We got 10 inches a year. no frost.... well, almost never. Here in Ohio, we get our first frost about the middle of October usually, and our last frost usually about the beginning of May. But the really cold weather doesn't start until towards the end of November, and rarely extends beyond the beginning of April. (I mean daytime temps of 40 degrees F or below). During January/February, we may get strings of a week or so where the lows are minus 10 F, and the highs are in the teens. but it doesn't last... the temps tend to pop back above freezing regularly. so not bad, as continental U.S. weather goes. Last year, I made do with 4 tons of coal for the whole winter, because we were broke. I was extremely cautious with every chunk. And with which areas of the house I heated. And with how warm we got. It wasn't fun, but we all lived to tell the tale. Heating the house like normal people do, takes about 8 tons of coal. This year, I am going to have 10 tons of coal sitting in my yard (or my basement) by the end of November..... I feel rich! The garbage dump is expanding, and they hit a seam of coal. Well, they can't re-bury it because of environmental regulations, so they are selling it cheap. I am getting my 10 tons for the price of 5. Yay, EPA!

Only - with us it's Chickens not Goats... and they've never been in the house and eaten my chocolate. I love chickens! For various reasons, I haven't had any since we moved to Ohio seven years ago. But I intend to change that this spring. We are planning a portable coop, and we'll pick up a half dozen or so peeps at the local Feed Store. I'm really looking forward to having chickens again. In California, the hens would get into the house and lay eggs in more or less convenient spots.... the kids' pillows were less convenient. The frying pan was more convenient. Honest! In the frying pan. She was a very cooperative hen... Kevin has made me promise No Roosters. I like to hear them crowing, but Kevin was always annoyed by it.

Too expensive. did u kill the valuable bees? i thought there was shhortage? Why too expensive? There is honey bee shortage? The reason there's a shortage of bees is because they keep dying of various diseases and pests and pesticiides and such. It is expensive to try to keep them alive, and to buy new bees to replace the ones that die. So, as Kerlyssa points out, I used to mind my own beeswax. In the future I will probably simply be minding other people's beeswax.

Aw, Kevin is such a damper. Just becasue he doesn't like the sound of squeeky doors magnified 1,000 times or fingernails on blackboards and stuff like that. Tell him I said he was a spoilsp..... wait....never mind.

Is spoilsport an insult? We had several roosters. What he really used to hate was during the full moon, when they would crow for several hours during the middle of the night, perched in the tree outside our bedroom. I slept right through it, because as a mommy I am night-time attuned to noises that sound like little tiny children making wee-itsy gagging noises. My kids could roll over in an awkward fashion, and I would be wide awake. But let a half-dozen roosters serenade the moon? Nah. "What? Did they crow last night?"

It works in public places too. Back when the kids were younger, I could hear a kid saying, "Wipe my bottom!" through four doors, three rooms and a hall. What always got me was finding my husband chatting 20 feet from the bathroom, completely oblivious. "What? He needs help in the bathroom? No, I never heard anything...."

It's not so bad as long as you only have one. If there's no dominance testosterone war going on between a couple of roosters - there's a lot less crowing. We had 4 at one time and it was a non-stop crow fest 24/7! Well they did sleep for a few hours at night but the crowing got earlier and earlier because there was always a rooster that had to out do the others. We're down to 2 now and it's not so bad. (well - single digit temps don't hurt either)
